OpenAI and Veterans Forge are running an in-person ChatGPT skills session in Washington, DC, as part of activity around the opening of OpenAI’s new DC office.

The two-hour event, titled Beyond Basic ChatGPT, will take place from 12pm to 2pm EDT on 15 May. It is open to veterans, active-duty service members, and military spouses, with a focus on practical AI use during career transition, professional change, and everyday decision-making.

The session is being supported by OpenAI Academy and will be hosted with Veterans Forge, a nonprofit organization focused on helping veterans build skills in AI and future technologies.

ChatGPT training targets practical use

The event is designed to move participants beyond basic prompting and into more structured use of ChatGPT as a thinking and planning tool.

According to the event information, participants will work through guided examples and hands-on activities covering important conversations, reflection, clearer planning, and the creation of a simple custom GPT for a recurring personal or professional need.

The session is intended for veterans and active-duty service members in transition in the Washington, DC, area. Participants are expected to leave with a stronger understanding of how to use ChatGPT intentionally, practical experience applying it to real situations, and a custom GPT they can use after the event.

Veterans Forge wrote on LinkedIn that Beyond Basic ChatGPT is "designed to help Veterans, active duty service members, and military spouses move past basic prompting and start using AI with more confidence, purpose, and practical value."

Veterans Forge links AI to future work

Veterans Forge said it is joining OpenAI for the veterans-focused event to mark the opening of OpenAI’s new DC office. The organization said it was "so very grateful for OpenAI Academy’s support in helping prepare our military community for the future of work."

The event will be led by Robbe Addis, Founder and Board Member at Veterans Forge, and Keith Peterson, Co-founder and CEO at Veterans Forge.

The session is structured around practical ChatGPT use, not technical AI development. Participants will work through planning, decision-making, communication, and custom GPT creation, with the event designed for members of the military community navigating career transition, professional change, or new civilian opportunities.

AI skills move into transition support

Veterans Forge describes its wider work as providing AI and future technology training, mentorship, hands-on learning, and community support for veterans moving into technology careers.

The Beyond Basic ChatGPT session gives that work a live training format, with registration open to veterans, active-duty service members, and military spouses. The event page says seats are limited and the session will be held in person in Washington, DC.

The session takes place on 15 May, with OpenAI and Veterans Forge using the event to connect AI skills with career transition and workforce readiness.
