Handshake and OpenAI launch Codex Creator Challenge to expand student AI skills
New initiative connects students, employers, and AI tools as demand grows for applied skills over theoretical knowledge.
Handshake and OpenAI have launched the Codex Creator Challenge, giving students access to AI coding tools and a route to showcase projects directly to employers.
Handshake is a career network used by students, universities, and employers to support hiring, internships, and early career development.
The initiative brings OpenAI’s Codex tool to students through Handshake’s platform, alongside partnerships with employers including GEICO, L'Oréal, KPFF Consulting Engineers, and ZS Associates. It centers on students building and submitting AI-powered projects rather than completing structured courses or assessments.
Focus on building, not just learning
In a LinkedIn post, Handshake said the challenge is designed to help students move “beyond theory and into real-world application, enabling anyone to learn and grow their skills for the AI economy.”
Alongside the launch, OpenAI highlighted how students are already using Codex to build tools such as study assistants, portfolio websites, and research applications.
OpenAI said: “Students don’t just need to learn about AI. They need chances to build with it.”
It added: “In a rapidly evolving job market, using AI to create something tangible shows more than familiarity with a new technology. It can reflect initiative, applied skill, creativity, and the confidence to turn an idea into something useful.”
Credits, competition, and employer visibility
Eligible students can access $100 in Codex credits to support project development, with submissions open through April 30, 2026.
Participants are required to submit projects through Handshake’s platform, including a project description and live URL. Multiple entries are permitted, with projects assessed across criteria including clarity, usefulness, creativity, execution, and usability.
Top submissions move through multiple rounds of evaluation, with finalists invited to submit a video pitch before final judging by a panel that includes representatives from Handshake, OpenAI, and partner organizations.
Prizes include up to $10,000 in OpenAI API credits and a one-year subscription to ChatGPT Plus.
Access, eligibility, and next steps
The Codex Creator Challenge is open to eligible students aged 18 or over in the United States, with submissions running from March 24 to April 30, 2026.
The challenge builds on Handshake’s AI Showcase, where students can publish projects directly to their profiles. The addition of a structured competition introduces a formal route for submissions to be reviewed by employers and partner organizations.
