Anthropic Institute launched to address AI risks and public understanding
New function will focus on policy, economics, and societal impact as AI capability accelerates, with leadership and early hires confirmed.
Anthropic has launched The Anthropic Institute, a new internal function focused on understanding and communicating the societal impact of advanced AI systems, as well as informing policy and governance discussions.
The initiative brings together research, policy, and economic analysis at a time when AI companies are increasing efforts to engage with governments, institutions, and the public on the implications of rapidly advancing systems.
New institute focuses on public understanding and policy
Marina Favaro, who has worked at Anthropic for over three years across policy and partnerships, shared details of the new initiative in a LinkedIn post. She wrote: “Three and a half years is a long time in AI, and it's been such an adventure bringing things from ‘zero to one’ at Anthropic. Now I get to do it again!”
Favaro explained that the institute will focus on bridging gaps between technical development and public understanding, adding: “I'm helping Jack Clark stand up The Anthropic Institute, a new function dedicated to advancing the public conversation around AI by closing the information gap between frontier labs and the rest of the world.”
She also referenced her earlier work with the company’s policy team, writing: “Jack originally hired me onto his four-person policy team back in mid-2022 (we've grown a bit since then!).”
Favaro added: “One of my favorite things about working here has always been bridging the technical and policy worlds, and this role lets me lean into that even more.”
Research areas span jobs, safety, and governance
The Anthropic Institute will draw on existing research teams within the company, including those focused on system testing, economic impact, and real-world usage.
According to the company, the institute will examine how AI systems affect jobs, economies, and public systems, alongside risks such as misuse, governance challenges, and system behavior.
The organization will also engage with external groups, including workers and industries experiencing disruption, with the aim of informing both internal development and broader policy discussions.
Leadership, hiring, and expansion plans
The institute is led by Jack Clark, who will take on the role of Head of Public Benefit. It includes an interdisciplinary team spanning machine learning, economics, and social science, with further hiring underway.
Named hires include Matt Botvinick, Anton Korinek, and Zoë Hitzig, who will contribute to work on legal systems, economic transformation, and links between research and model development.
Alongside the institute, Anthropic is expanding its Public Policy team and opening a Washington, DC office as it increases engagement with global AI governance and regulation.
