UCL scientist Susan Hopkins to lead UKHSA as chief executive from September
Appointment places infectious diseases specialist at the helm of the UK’s health security agency.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has named Professor Susan Hopkins as its next Chief Executive Officer, with the transition set for September.
UKHSA is an executive agency sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care that prevents, prepares for, and responds to infectious diseases and environmental hazards to keep communities safe, save lives, and protect livelihoods.
Appointment and remit
Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting announces the appointment following Hopkins’s tenure as UKHSA’s Chief Medical Advisor, where she leads the Clinical and Public Health Group. Acting CEO Dyfed Alsop returns to Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO when Hopkins takes up the role.

Background and experience
Hopkins is Professor of Infectious Diseases and Health Security at University College London (UCL) and continues clinical work as a consultant in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Career highlights include serving as UKHSA’s first Chief Medical Advisor since 2021, National Strategic Response Director for COVID‑19 (2020–22), and Deputy Director, Antimicrobial Resistance at Public Health England’s National Infection Service (2018–20).
