OpenAI Academy launches beginner session on Codex for non-technical professionals
OpenAI Academy is hosting a new introductory session on Codex, OpenAI’s software engineering agent, designed specifically for non-technical professionals seeking to understand how AI-driven coding tools are being deployed in real-world work settings.
Jane Kim, who works in Community at OpenAI Academy, took to LinkedIn to promote the session, writing: “It's certainly been a fast moving couple of weeks in AI.” She added that for those outside technical roles, “all the new terminology, tools, and updates can feel like a lot to keep up with...”
The upcoming session, titled Introduction to Codex, will take place on Friday, February 27 from 3–4 PM ET and will be led by Derrick Choi, Codex Deployment Engineer at OpenAI. According to the event overview, the webinar will provide “a beginner friendly, high-level overview of Codex — the AI system that powers code generation.”
Breaking down Codex for non-technical users
Kim said the session will “break down what Codex is, how it’s being used in the real world, and practical ways you can start incorporating it into your own work.” She emphasized that the webinar is “designed specifically for non-technical users” and described it as “a perfect starting point for all of us who are generally curious and ready to learn.”
The event description states that attendees will explore examples of how Codex is being used for “real work and everyday tasks,” and how non-technical professionals can benefit from it. “Whether you’re curious about the future of AI and software, want to better collaborate with technical teams, or simply want to understand the possibilities, this webinar is your starting point. No coding experience needed!”
The session reflects growing interest among business leaders, educators, and operational teams in understanding AI-powered development tools without necessarily writing code themselves.
Codex positioned as a software engineering agent
Codex is presented by OpenAI as an agent capable of executing real engineering tasks, including code generation, repository understanding, pull request delivery, and automated workflows. Product materials describe it as “Your AI pair programmer” and position the Codex app as a command center for agentic coding.
Features highlighted include multi-agent workflows, automation of routine engineering tasks, and integration across development environments. Demonstrated use cases range from implementing dark mode and reviewing pull requests to generating landing page assets and handling CI/CD-related processes.
By hosting a session tailored to non-technical professionals, OpenAI Academy appears to be widening the conversation around AI agents beyond engineering teams. As software agents increasingly move into product development, operations, and cross-functional collaboration, understanding how they function may become part of broader digital literacy expectations.
