Skillsoft lays off entire Codecademy curriculum team, senior leader confirms
Senior Curriculum Director says the full curriculum function has been cut, raising questions about product direction and AI-led learning strategy at the coding platform.
Skillsoft has laid off the entire Codecademy curriculum team, according to Zoe Bachman, Senior Curriculum Director at Codecademy, who shared the news publicly on LinkedIn.
The move affects the team responsible for developing interactive programming content, career paths, and AI-powered learning features across the platform.
In a LinkedIn post, Bachman wrote: “Yesterday, Skillsoft laid off my entire Codecademy Curriculum team. It’s not how I imagined leaving after nearly nine years, especially because this team was doing exceptional work. Still, I’m walking away incredibly proud of what we built.”
Codecademy was acquired by Skillsoft in 2022 as part of its broader push into digital learning and technology skills. The removal of the curriculum team signals a structural shift at a time when AI-led learning tools are reshaping how coding and technical education products are built and maintained.
A nine-year tenure and product transformation
Bachman joined Codecademy in 2017 as a curriculum developer and most recently served as Head of Learning. In her post, she outlined key initiatives led during her time at the company.
She referenced “Reimagining interactive learning with experiences like Code Foundations, moving beyond the browser IDE into games and applets that helped learners build real conceptual understanding of programming and tech careers.”
She also cited work on redesigning Career Paths into job-relevant coursework with portfolio projects, code challenges, and professional certifications, adding that “The Full Stack Engineer Path became one of our most popular and revenue-driving offerings.”
The post also highlights Codecademy’s recent AI developments, including “Helping launch AI-powered learning experiences, from an AI learning assistant and interactive prompting component to our newest product, AI Builder, positioning Codecademy for a fast-changing technical landscape.”
Questions over Codecademy’s curriculum direction
The layoff of the entire curriculum team raises immediate questions about how Codecademy will develop and maintain learning content going forward. Curriculum design has traditionally been central to coding platforms’ differentiation, particularly in structured career pathways and certification tracks.
Bachman acknowledged the transition while signaling openness to new opportunities. She wrote that she is “taking a breath, appreciating this moment of transition, and heading into the next chapter with a lot of clarity about the kind of work I want to do.”
She also noted: “And lastly: there are many incredible former Codecademy folks now on the market. If you’re hiring across ed-tech (instructional design, product, operations, engineering, marketing, and more), feel free to comment or DM me. I’m happy to connect you with great people.”
Skillsoft has not publicly detailed the scope or rationale behind the restructuring in the material provided. For now, the public confirmation comes from within the team itself. Whether this signals deeper restructuring within Codecademy or a pivot toward a different content production model remains to be seen.
