OpenAI and Tata Group forge multi-layered AI partnership spanning skills, enterprise, and infrastructure
A strategic agreement combines workforce training, Enterprise ChatGPT rollout, industry-specific agentic AI, and large-scale infrastructure buildout in India.
OpenAI, Tata Group, and Tata Consultancy Services have announced a multi-dimensional strategic partnership that spans AI skills development, enterprise deployment, industry-specific agentic AI solutions, and large-scale infrastructure investment in India.
The agreement, announced in Mumbai, includes AI training initiatives for Indian youth, Enterprise ChatGPT access for several thousand Tata Group employees, joint development of industry AI systems, and an initial 100MW AI infrastructure commitment with the option to scale to 1GW. The scope signals a coordinated effort to embed AI across workforce development, enterprise transformation, and national infrastructure.
Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI, says, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.”
Sidharth Sharma, GTM Leadership, SEA & India at OpenAI, posted on LinkedIn that he was “incredibly proud to share a milestone for OpenAI in India,” adding that Tata Group “has always been a name that stood for trust, innovation, and nation-building.”
Workforce training and enterprise rollout
A central pillar of the partnership is AI skills development. The OpenAI Foundation and TCS will collaborate to provide AI training and resources to Indian youth, with a stated objective of improving the livelihoods of at least one million young people. The initiative includes the development of technology toolkits for NGOs and youth-focused programs centered on responsible AI application.
At enterprise level, several thousand Tata Group employees will receive access to Enterprise ChatGPT. TCS will also leverage OpenAI’s Codex to support software engineering outcomes.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, says, “This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era.”
Infrastructure and agentic AI buildout
The partnership includes co-building industry-specific agentic AI solutions, combining OpenAI’s agentic systems with TCS’ industry expertise. The companies will also pursue joint go-to-market initiatives to support enterprise AI transformation in India and globally.
On infrastructure, TCS’ HyperVault unit will lead development of AI-ready capacity in India. Phase one will deliver 100MW, with the option to scale to 1GW, supporting next-generation AI workloads and positioning India within global AI infrastructure development.
The agreement reflects a broader shift in AI strategy: moving from isolated pilots toward coordinated, infrastructure-backed partnerships that link platform providers, enterprise integrators, workforce training, and national AI ambitions.
