University of Maryland Global Campus recruits Vice President to redesign learner experience

Maryland-based online university seeks executive to lead AI-powered, product-led transformation across degrees, credentials, and digital services.

The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is recruiting a Vice President of Learner Experience Design to oversee enterprise learner experience and academic product strategy, as the institution accelerates its shift toward AI-enabled, skills-based online education.

Angie Besendorfer, who leads the Learner Experience and Success division, shared the role publicly on LinkedIn, stating: “We are recruiting at University of Maryland Global Campus for our final vice president in the Learner Experience and Success division. The Vice President of Learner Experience Design will report to me and will be responsible for shaping and stewarding UMGC’s enterprise learner experience.”

UMGC, based in Adelphi, Maryland, serves a global adult learner population and is positioning the role as central to shaping what it describes as the next generation of online and global public higher education.

Enterprise learner experience strategy

Reporting to the Chief Learner Experience & Success Officer, the Vice President will lead an integrated Product and Experience organization that includes Digital Student Experience, Learning Resources & Access Services, Global Student Support Services, and Learning Product Development.

The role is responsible for aligning learner-facing experiences and academic products with workforce expectations and the university’s Strategic Plan. According to the job description, the Vice President will help ensure that degrees, certificates, stackable credentials, and employer-facing offerings are coherent, outcomes-driven, and designed around learner needs.

Besendorfer wrote that the role “helps ensure that learner-facing experiences and academic products are coherent, purposeful, and aligned to learner needs, workforce expectations, and the University’s Strategic Plan.”

The position also carries responsibility for establishing shared experience principles, success measures, and product health signals across enrollment, academic delivery, and post-completion engagement.

AI-powered and skills-based transformation

UMGC’s posting signals a deliberate move beyond traditional instructional design workflows. The Vice President will lead the creation of what the university describes as a globally scaled, learner-centric, data-driven, skills-based, and AI-powered organization.

The role includes oversight of generative AI integration across curriculum design, assessment, and digital student experiences, alongside responsibility for academic guardrails and evaluation standards for emerging technologies.

Faculty development is also part of the remit. In partnership with the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President will ensure training prepares faculty to support next-generation learning experiences, with faculty positioned as academic partners within a matrixed accountability model.

The job description notes that the university seeks a leader comfortable operating in complex environments, with experience delivering enterprise-wide transformation in student-centered, product-led organizations.

The position is full time and based in the Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia metro area, with relocation required. Following relocation, the role will operate in a hybrid model, with three to four days per week in office.
