Google Classroom rolls out AI-suggested feedback for written assignments

Gemini-powered drafting tool is now live in Google Classroom, allowing educators to generate personalized feedback while retaining full control over final comments.

Google has launched AI-suggested feedback for written assignments in Google Classroom, enabling educators to generate draft comments using Gemini that are tailored to a student’s work, grade level, and selected focus areas.

The feature began rolling out on February 19, 2026, across Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with visibility expanding gradually over up to 15 days.

The update places generative AI directly inside the grading workflow. Teachers can select “Help me write” when adding private comments on an assignment, prompting Gemini to suggest draft feedback. Educators can then review, edit, and refine the content before sharing it with students. The move signals Google’s continued push to embed AI into everyday EdTech tools, targeting workload pressures and feedback consistency at scale.

Drafting support built into the grading flow

According to the Google Workspace team, the new capability is designed to help educators provide “high-quality, personalized support to their students more efficiently.” Educators can generate suggestions that reflect a student’s submission, grade level, and specific instructional focus.

Google says educators have reported that personalized feedback is critical for closing learning gaps but remains one of the most time-consuming elements of teaching. By using AI to assist in drafting comments, teachers can reduce the hours spent writing manual feedback and deliver more timely responses.

The company states that by highlighting strengths and identifying areas for improvement, the feature supports stronger student self-reflection and evaluation skills. However, final responsibility remains with the teacher, who must approve and edit any AI-generated suggestions before they are shared.

AI-suggested feedback is part of Gemini in Google Classroom and is currently available only in English. Administrators can control who is permitted to use Gemini in Google Classroom through the Admin console, including the option to turn the service on or off. There is no separate end-user setting for the feature.
