Old Dominion University, Grubhub and Starship Technologies launch robot food delivery service on campus
Old Dominion University (ODU) has launched a robot food delivery service across campus, working in partnership with food delivery service Grubhub and delivery technology provider Starship Technologies.

A fleet of 11 autonomous Starship robots will deliver from seven campus outlets - Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Panera Bread, Qdoba, and Steak’N Shake.
Students, faculty staff and other members of the ODU community can use the Grubhub app to order food and drinks to be delivered anywhere on campus. Flex points can be used to pay for the meals, but the delivery fee must be paid for with a credit card.
Each robot can carry up to 20 pounds worth of products, or the equivalent of approximately three bags of shopping, and each delivery usually take a few minutes, depending on the items selected.
"We are thrilled to be one of the few universities in the state offering expanded food delivery services on campus," says Shannon Hurt, Assistant Vice President for Campus Life Services at ODU’s Division of Student Enrolment, Engagement and Services. "Feedback from students has shown a strong desire for this convenience, and we hope our food delivery robots will not only enhance the dining experience but also serve as a unique and engaging cultural addition to campus life, especially during special events like homecoming."
Starship Technologies says its zero-emission robots have made more than 4 million autonomous deliveries to date, using a combination of machine learning, AI and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate obstacles.
The robots are said to be capable of crossing roads, climbing curbs, and traveling at night in both rain and snow.
A team of humans can also monitor the progress of robots remotely and take control if necessary.
