Maine DOE opens applications for statewide multilingual learning program

The Maine Department of Education has taken to LinkedIn to announce recruitment for 120 certified educators to join a new professional learning series focused on multilingual learner instruction.

The Maine Department of Education has used LinkedIn to confirm that it is recruiting 120 certified educators for a new professional learning series designed to strengthen instruction for multilingual learners across the state. The department oversees public education in Maine, including curriculum support, statewide policy, and professional development programs.

The series forms part of the state’s Literacy and Numeracy Action Plans, which emphasize evidence-based instruction and multitiered systems of support. Sessions will run from January to June 2026, with applications due on 12 December 2025.

Focus on WIDA standards and instructional practice

According to the department, the program will deepen the integration of the WIDA English Language Development Standards and support educators in applying language-integrated instruction. The initiative includes collaboration with SupportEd, an organization known for its work in multilingual learner instructional design.

The department highlighted ongoing gaps in achievement for multilingual learners, noting persistent disparities in mathematics and literacy outcomes. The series aims to strengthen collaboration between educators, expand use of WIDA-aligned practices, and support the creation of new Maine-specific instructional resources.

Educators across a range of roles are eligible to apply, including classroom teachers, content-area teachers, multilingual learner specialists, and those working in administrative or program coordination positions. Each cohort will take part in six two-hour sessions scheduled between January and June.

Selection will prioritize geographic representation, grade-level distribution, and varied educator roles. Participants will receive classroom tools, opportunities for collaboration, and access to national experts from SupportEd.

The initiative is supported through Title II and Title IV state reservation funds. Application decisions will be issued on 19 December 2025.
