LEGO Education preps LEGO League STEM competition for August 2027
The program will follow the final FIRST LEGO League season and move toward LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits from 2028-2029.
LEGO Education will start LEGO League globally in August 2027 for students aged five to 16
LEGO Education will start LEGO League globally in August 2027, creating a new competitive STEM program for students aged five to 16 after the final FIRST LEGO League season.
The new program will be delivered in classrooms, after-school settings, clubs, and out-of-school teams, with students able to compete through school, regional, national, and international events.
FIRST LEGO League will end after the 2026-2027 BIOGLOW season. LEGO Education says registration for the first LEGO League season will open between March and May 2027, once BIOGLOW has finished.
For the 2027-2028 season, teams will be able to use LEGO Education SPIKE, legacy hardware, and LEGO Education Computer Science & AI. From 2028-2029 onward, LEGO League will be based on LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits and hardware, while teams can still use any type of LEGO bricks in their builds.
Anthony Hernandez, Business Development and Partnerships at LEGO Education, said on LinkedIn that LEGO League represents "our next leap forward in delivering purposeful, hands-on, playful learning experiences that build resilience and confidence in every student."
New competition follows FIRST LEGO League
LEGO Education confirmed that FIRST LEGO League will come to an end after the 2026-2027 BIOGLOW season.
LEGO League keeps the familiar structure of a seasonal STEM competition, including an August season launch, local registration during the year, and progression to regional, national, and international events between March and July.
Each season will have a theme connected to real-world challenges. Students will work through a game-based design challenge, a STEM project, and a culminating event experience.
LEGO Education said on LinkedIn that the program is designed for students to "imagine, build, test, and create," with competition opportunities available in classrooms and after-school settings.
The core skills are framed around the 4 Cs: collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
Computer Science and AI becomes the long-term platform
The first LEGO League season will give teams a transition year. In 2027-2028, teams can use LEGO Education SPIKE and legacy portfolios, as well as LEGO Education Computer Science & AI.
The longer-term direction is clearer from 2028-2029, when LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits and hardware become required for the program’s game and student models.
That shift brings coding and AI more directly into the competition. Students will be able to use block-based coding through LEGO Education Coding Canvas or move into text-based coding with Python, including through an integrated development environment such as Visual Studio Code.
LEGO Education says the 2027-2028 season will be the first to include missions that can use AI tools and lessons from the Computer Science & AI kits.
The company says teams can continue using any LEGO bricks, including LEGO Technic bricks, in their team builds.
Age bands cover early years to secondary
LEGO League will cover two age bands: five to seven, equivalent to US grades K-2, and eight to 16, covering US grades 3-8.
Students aged five to seven will work in teams of four. They will build and program a solution to an annual themed challenge, complete a small research project, and create a visual presentation.
The older division will include an annual themed game, design challenges, a related research project, a presentation, and progression through competitive stages. LEGO Education says it is developing differentiated lessons for students aged eight-plus and 11-plus, with the same game scored separately to support fair competition.
For the eight to 16 division, LEGO Education recommends teams of eight students, with a minimum of four and a recommended maximum of ten. Local operational partners will set specific team rules for each country or region.
The program will include access to LEGO Education Coding Canvas, the LEGO Education Teacher Portal, and supporting materials. Registration details and costs have not yet been finalized, with LEGO Education directing schools, partners, and teams to sign up for updates ahead of the March to May 2027 registration window.
