AI company expands its Asia-Pacific presence with a new office in Australia, reflecting rising enterprise and research adoption of Claude.

Anthropic will open a new office in Sydney in the coming weeks, expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and strengthening its operations across Australia and New Zealand.

The move will make Sydney the company’s fourth office in the region, alongside Tokyo, Bengaluru, and Seoul. Anthropic says the expansion reflects growing demand from organizations across Australia and New Zealand using its AI models and tools, including Claude.

The company plans to build a local team in Sydney and increase collaboration with businesses, research institutions, and policymakers as AI adoption accelerates across multiple sectors.

Expanding presence in the Asia-Pacific region

Anthropic says the new office will focus initially on supporting enterprise, startup, and research customers across Australia and New Zealand.

The company already works with several organizations in the region, including enterprises such as Canva, Quantium, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia, alongside startups developing AI applications across sectors including agricultural technology, climate technology, and robotics.

Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic, says the expansion reflects how organizations in the region are applying AI across multiple industries: “We’re excited by the ways organizations in Australia and New Zealand are applying AI to areas of national importance—financial services, agricultural technology, clean energy innovation, healthcare delivery, cutting-edge deep tech and scientific research, along with AI transformation in the enterprise.

“Establishing a local presence will help us to develop strong partnerships in ANZ and ensure Claude is built with respect for the unique goals, opportunities, and challenges of the region.”

Strong regional usage of Claude

Anthropic says Australia and New Zealand show relatively high adoption of its Claude AI platform compared with other regions.

According to the company’s Economic Index, Australia ranks fourth globally and New Zealand eighth in Claude usage relative to population. The company says users in both countries frequently apply the system to coding tasks, research, and educational instruction.

The company has already started building a local team in Sydney ahead of the office opening.

Anthropic executives also plan to visit Australia later in March to formalize partnerships and meet with enterprise customers, policymakers, and research organizations.

Alongside the new office, Anthropic says it is exploring options to expand computing infrastructure in Australia through third-party partners. The company says local capacity has been a frequent request from enterprises and government agencies in the region, particularly organizations that require data residency.

Anthropic says discussions around longer-term infrastructure development are still in early stages.
