Students at Roehampton University will use Google Gemini for Education to enhance learning and AI skills
The University of Roehampton is introducing Google Gemini for Education to enhance learning, improve the student experience and support teaching.
It is part of the institution’s vision to embed AI across its four constituent colleges to equip gradates with the skills needed for an increasingly AI-enabled workplace.
Google Gemini for Education was selected for its strong alignment with teaching and learning, including access to Gemini and Gemini Notebook as well as its integration with learning materials and Moodle.
The platform also offers enterprise-grade security and governance controls, ensuring the University can provide institution-wide access within a managed and educationally focused environment.
The university said that, as AI becomes increasingly embedded across industries and professions, it wants to take a proactive approach to ensuring students can develop the confidence and digital capabilities employers are looking for.
Enhancing critical thinking and academic integrity
While critical thinking, academic judgement, creativity and academic integrity remain at the heart of a Roehampton education, the use of AI is intended to enhance learning rather than replace it, the institution said.
The AI tools will be used to support students in developing their knowledge and understanding while encouraging thoughtful and responsible engagement with technology.
Students will have free access to Gemini for Education and Gemini Notebook giving them new tools to support research, revision, study planning and independent learning.
Ian Dickens, Chief Information Officer at the University of Roehampton, said: “This is about giving our students the opportunity to engage with AI in a responsible, ethical and meaningful way.
“By embedding AI tools within the learning experience, we're helping prepare graduates with the skills and adaptability needed for the workplaces of tomorrow.”
The rollout will include training and guidance for students and staff, to support the effective, ethical and confident use of AI. By building AI literacy across the institution, Roehampton aims to ensure that students are not only consumers of AI technology but informed and responsible users who can apply these skills throughout their careers.
The initiative will also support staff by reducing administrative burden and enabling more efficient ways of working. Staff will be encouraged to explore approved AI tools safely and responsibly, while benefiting from clear guidance, governance frameworks and training.
