Notre Dame de Namur University rolls out video coaching for teacher candidates with Edthena

Notre Dame de Namur University is introducing video-based coaching in its teacher preparation programs through a partnership with Edthena and the Center for Reaching & Teaching the Whole Child.

Notre Dame de Namur University is integrating video-based coaching and classroom observation tools into its teacher preparation programs through a partnership with Edthena and the Center for Reaching & Teaching the Whole Child, as institutions explore how AI-enabled tools can support teacher development.

The initiative will introduce Edthena’s VC3 video coaching platform across NDNU’s teacher preparation programs, enabling teacher candidates and supervisors to review recorded classroom practice, share feedback, and engage in structured reflection.

University leaders say the program is intended to strengthen supervision, coaching, and reflective practice for teacher candidates while aligning training with teaching performance expectations used in California’s credentialing system.

NDNU introduces video-based observation and feedback

NDNU will use Edthena’s VC3 platform to support observation and coaching across its teacher preparation programs. The system allows teacher candidates to record classroom teaching and share the video with supervisors for feedback and discussion.

Faculty and supervisors will use the platform to guide observation and mentoring processes while supporting structured reflection aligned with program goals related to culturally responsive and relationship-centered teaching.

Kelly Vaughn, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education at NDNU, says: “I believe Edthena will be a true game changer for how our faculty, university supervisors, cooperating teachers, and teacher candidates engage in meaningful conversations and debriefs. The platform helps us analyze and reflect on teacher candidates’ recorded videos that demonstrate their teaching practice, creating richer opportunities for growth.”

She adds: “Not only does Edthena support tighter alignment with the teacher performance expectations set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), it also strengthens connection and collaboration across our programs. We are already beginning to see these positive impacts in our exploratory pilot, guided by the Edthena team and supported by our committed faculty and staff.”

Research partnership explores human-centered use of AI tools

The Center for Reaching & Teaching the Whole Child is supporting the initiative as a research and implementation partner, helping design coaching practices that incorporate video tools while maintaining a focus on the social, emotional, and cultural aspects of teaching.

The organization’s Anchor Competencies Framework will guide how NDNU integrates reflective practice, coaching, and educator development into the program.
