Acer EMEA targets 2,470-ton CO2 cut by 2025 with electric trucks, biofuels, and tracking
Plan centers on electric truck routes, certified biofuels, shipment-level CO2 tracking, and new carrier partnerships.
Acer, the global PC and electronics company, says its EMEA supply chain is working toward a 2,470-ton reduction in logistics emissions by the end of 2025, compared with 274 tons reduced in 2023.
The company outlines three main levers: piloting electric truck moves in the Netherlands, adopting certified biofuels such as HVO with logistics partners, and using an internal tool to monitor emissions for each shipment so teams can target changes.
Freight mix, volatility, and what is being measured
Acer’s annual flow covers more than 5,000 TEU by sea, over 3,000 full-truckload moves on land, and around a dozen cargo-flight equivalents from Chinese origin hubs to EMEA destinations. The company states it prioritizes ocean freight and has scaled back air and sea-air routings.
Riccardo Bernasconi, EMEA Senior Director of Supply Chain at Acer, says, “The preference for sea transport, - Riccardo Bernasconi, EMEA Senior Director of Supply Chain at Acer - is motivated by a clear sustainability objective, favouring modes of transport with a lower environmental impact. This is complemented by reduced air and sea-air transport (e.g. via Dubai), as well as land transport by truck and a train that is currently suspended for geopolitical reasons. Events such as the Suez Canal crisis can increase costs by up to 25-30%, also affecting the environmental footprint, which is why transport choices are fundamental for both economic efficiency and sustainability.”
The company points to earlier consolidation that removed 779 truck journeys in 2022, cutting 593 tons of CO2. It also cites Sustainable Maritime Fuel, which it says can deliver up to 85 percent emissions reduction on eligible lanes. Internally, Acer says budgets and contractual penalties are reinvested into further decarbonization projects.
Partnership model, repair strategy, and workforce measures
Acer states it has renewed its transport partnership with Kuehne+Nagel and added DSV, tying both to emissions monitoring and decarbonization reinvestment mechanisms. Work with SUPSI focuses on research in sustainable logistics. Beyond freight, Acer says it is preparing for the EU Right to Repair directive by increasing spare-parts availability and scaling board-level repairs so components can be refurbished and returned to circulation.
Ave Stella Maris Crotti, Sustainability Manager at Kuehne+Nagel, says, “As logistics advisors, we help our customers transform their business model by strategically design their value chain to make them profitable, sustainable and future proof.” She adds, “Collaboration and transparency are key to turn our ESG commitment into action.”
‘Sustainability is part of our corporate culture,’ adds Trivikram Jayacham, Acer EMEA HR Senior Director. "For this reason, we have embarked on a “proactive path” by adopting innovative business models that prioritise reducing our environmental impact. Among the projects, which are small but greatly appreciated by our employees, are the charging station for electric cars and the free provision of eBikes/eScooters to promote sustainable mobility during working hours."
