University of Maryland Global Campus names Barry Sugarman Interim VP for Learning Design

The appointment signals a renewed focus on learning design, platforms, and employability as large online universities continue to align curriculum strategy with workforce and skills delivery.

University of Maryland Global Campus has appointed Barry Sugarman as Interim Vice President, Integrative Learning Design, expanding his leadership remit following an earlier senior role overseeing learning platforms.

Sugarman shared the update in a LinkedIn post, where he said he was “happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Interim Vice President, Integrative Learning Design at University of Maryland Global Campus.”

The interim appointment comes around six months after Sugarman moved into the role of Vice President, Learning Platforms at the institution. His new position brings together curriculum strategy, learning design, and platform development under a single leadership portfolio.

Sugarman has held multiple senior roles across higher education and education services, including leadership positions at AccelerEd, Walden University, and Laureate International Universities.

His background spans digital learning design, curriculum development, microlearning, professional development, and employability-focused education models.

Integrative learning design and workforce alignment

At University of Maryland Global Campus, the Integrative Learning Design function sits at the intersection of academic delivery, learning experience design, and workforce-relevant skills development. The interim role reflects ongoing efforts by large online universities to better connect program design, digital platforms, and career outcomes for adult and working learners.

UMGC operates primarily as a virtual university and works with tens of thousands of students globally across undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. Leadership roles focused on integrative design are increasingly central as institutions balance scale, flexibility, and skills alignment across online learning environments.
