University of Michigan expands free Google career certificates to alumni
The University of Michigan has extended free access to Google Career Certificates across its global alumni network, expanding an existing partnership focused on digital and AI-related skills.
The University of Michigan has expanded its partnership with Google to provide free access to Google Career Certificates for alumni across its Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses.
The update extends an initiative previously rolled out to students, faculty, and staff, widening access to industry-recognized credentials focused on digital and AI-related skills.
Access extended across the alumni network
The expanded access is delivered through Michigan Online and includes the university’s global alumni population, which numbers close to 700,000. Eligibility requires a valid University of Michigan uniqname and email address.
The partnership is coordinated through the university’s Center for Academic Innovation, which oversees digital learning strategy and credential delivery. The expansion follows earlier phases launched in 2025, when access to Google Career Certificates was first introduced for enrolled students and later extended to staff and faculty.
Announcing the expansion in a LinkedIn post, James DeVaney, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan and Founding Executive Director of the Center for Academic Innovation, said, “One of the most powerful roles a public university can play is expanding access to opportunity. Extending no-cost access to these credentials for nearly 700,000 alumni, alongside our students, faculty, and staff, reflects Michigan’s responsibility to support learning at every stage of life.”
Focus on AI and in-demand digital skills
The Google Career Certificates and Essentials courses available through the partnership cover areas including artificial intelligence tools, data analytics, information technology, cybersecurity, digital marketing, project management, and user experience design. Courses are delivered online and taught by Google employees working in those fields.
Short-form courses are designed to be completed in under ten hours, while longer certificate programs take several months and include pathways in IT support, UX design, digital marketing, and project management. Advanced certificates focus on areas such as data analytics, business intelligence, and IT automation with Python.
Google reports that a majority of learners who complete certificate programs experience positive career outcomes within six months, although outcomes vary by field and learner context.
The Google credentials sit alongside more than 300 open online courses taught by University of Michigan faculty and available at no cost through Michigan Online. Alumni can access both academic courses and industry credentials through the same platform, creating a single entry point for continued learning after graduation.
