Oak National Academy opens free API to make curriculum content available to EdTech developers

In a LinkedIn post, UK-based Oak National Academy confirms it is offering free access to its curriculum-aligned lessons, videos, and teaching resources through an API under the Open Government Licence.

Oak National Academy, a UK government-backed provider of online curriculum resources, has announced via LinkedIn that it is making its content available to EdTech developers through a free application programming interface (API).

The Oak Curriculum API allows access to curriculum-aligned resources for Key Stages 1 to 4 across a range of subjects. The initiative is licensed under the Open Government License, enabling developers, from startups to established learning platforms, to integrate Oak’s materials into their products at no cost.

Content and functionality

In its LinkedIn post, Oak National Academy states: “We’re here to support great teaching. We work to improve pupil outcomes and close the disadvantage gap by supporting teachers to teach, and enabling pupils to access a high-quality curriculum.

“As part of this mission, we're providing an API to make our high-quality content available to the wider education market for free on the Open Government Licence. Whether you're an emerging EdTech start-up, an established learning tool, or a quiz-based gaming platform, you can use our content with assurance that it has been created in line with the latest pedagogical research and aligned with our curriculum design principles.”

Through the API, developers can access curriculum data, stream lesson videos, or download slide decks and teaching transcripts. Bulk downloads of lesson and curriculum datasets are also available, which Oak notes could be used to enrich AI models, quizzing tools, or other digital learning platforms.

Developer integration and use cases

Oak provides an “API playground” and documentation for developers to test how to integrate the content into their systems. The resources include lesson assets, misconceptions data, quizzes, and transcripts, all structured to support a variety of applications in EdTech and AI development.

The LinkedIn post outlines the flexibility of the offer, noting: “Integrate Oak content into your product or service. Whether that's streaming Oak lesson videos or slide decks on your platform, pulling Oak questions and answers into your quizzing tool, or something else - you can access our openly-licensed content through the Oak Curriculum API.”

Focus on mission

Oak says the aim of the project is to support teachers while helping pupils access high-quality learning materials, particularly in closing the disadvantage gap. The organization emphasizes that all of the resources have been designed in line with current curriculum standards and pedagogical research.

Oak concludes in its LinkedIn post: “Through the Oak Curriculum API, you will have access to a wide range of educational content across all subjects for key stages 1-4. Our aim is that the curriculum data and lesson resources in the Oak Curriculum API can be used flexibly within almost any product or service that would benefit teachers and pupils.”
