Luiss and Google partner to integrate AI across teaching, research, and campus life

Luiss Guido Carli University and Google launch a collaboration to embed artificial intelligence across teaching, research, and university operations, alongside the development of a Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub.

Luiss Guido Carli University in Italy has announced a partnership with Google to introduce artificial intelligence across teaching, research, and campus operations, marking a new step in the university’s efforts to adapt higher education to the AI era.

The collaboration will bring Google AI tools into the classroom while supporting digital skills development among faculty, students, and university staff. It will also expand the work of the Luiss Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub, which is focused on testing new educational models and approaches to teaching.

University leaders and Google executives shared details of the partnership on LinkedIn following the announcement.

AI introduced across teaching and learning

The agreement between Luiss and Google focuses on four areas: teaching, learning, research, and productivity.

Teaching initiatives will examine how courses can be redesigned for an AI-enabled environment, while learning programs will focus on improving the student experience and supporting the development of critical thinking and digital skills. Research activity linked to the partnership will explore the impact of artificial intelligence on education systems and learning processes.

The productivity strand will examine how AI tools could support administrative workflows and help universities adapt internal roles to new technological demands.

Paolo Boccardelli, Rector at Luiss Guido Carli University, wrote on LinkedIn that the partnership reflects the university’s view of AI as a tool to support learning rather than replace human thinking: “At Luiss Guido Carli University, we look at AI as a booster for thought, not a substitute for it. A tool to free resources and time for what matters most in education: human interaction, critical thinking, creativity, and ethical responsibility.”

He added that the agreement is intended to support a structured path toward integrating AI into multiple aspects of university life: “The agreement Luiss reached with Google represents a strategic step in this direction. It is designed to support University in a structured path toward integrating AI into teaching, learning, research, and organizational processes, while strengthening the digital skills of faculty, students, and staff.”

AI tools tested across multiple disciplines

Early demonstrations at the university have explored how AI tools could be used in a range of academic subjects including business strategy, statistics, political science, and law.

Examples include simulators designed to support active learning, AI tutors that guide students through exercises, and tools that assist with idea generation during group projects.

The technology has also been tested in legal education scenarios, where AI agents can support students in simulations and structured case analysis. According to the university, the aim is to develop learning environments where artificial intelligence complements human reasoning and interpretation.

Google for Education is acting as the technology provider within the partnership, supplying AI tools and technical support for the initiative.

Colin Marson, Director EMEA and Asia Pacific at Google for Education, said the collaboration aims to explore how artificial intelligence can support learning in higher education: “Technology is at its best when it helps people realize their potential. That's why I am thrilled to announce that we have reached an agreement with Luiss Guido Carli University to help reimagine the learning experience in the AI era.”

He added that AI tools could support the development of core skills among students: “Together, we will bring AI tools into the classroom to assist students in asking better questions, developing critical thinking, and enhancing the uniquely human skills that will define their future.”

The partnership may also lead to additional initiatives such as innovation grants for faculty developing new teaching approaches, dedicated Google support for students and staff, and activities introducing AI tools to postgraduate students as they begin their studies.
