The new research center is an initiative of the Center for Educational and Instructional Technology Research (CEITR) and aims to advance the understanding and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.

The Phoenix AI Research Group works to advance the role of AI in education through research projects. Its focus areas include human and artificial cognition, AI-enhanced learning and teaching, AI applications for research and innovation, tools for administrators, and the integration of AI across various disciplines.

The Group also considers the ethical, social, and economic implications of AI in both education and society, aiming to ensure the responsible and equitable development of and implementation of AI technologies.

“To harness AI's power, it is critical to identify its effects, challenges, and strategies to address and resolve these issues while ensuring responsible use,” says Mansureh Kebritchi PhD, Chair of CEITR, and founder of the initiative. “Our mission is to inform this work and empower higher education by conducting AI research, providing essential resources, and importantly, fostering a strong AI community.”

The group will also organize workshops and webinars to bring together researchers, educators, and industry professionals to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and explore the future of AI education.

“Operating on the model of our College of Doctoral Studies, we want to foster a vibrant and collaborative GenAI research environment that encourages interdisciplinary knowledge sharing among faculty, students, and researchers,” adds Kebritchi.

Earlier this year, the University of Phoenix unveiled three new professional development pathways to address the growing demand for expertise in AI and Big Data.

The university also recently published a new report exploring the adoption of GenAI and considers strategies for building a future-ready workforce.
