Grammarly study signals higher student retention and GPA gains at Florida Atlantic University
New data from a Florida Atlantic University analysis highlights measurable shifts in completion, persistence, and academic performance among students using Grammarly’s writing support tool.
Superhuman for Education’s Mary Rose Craycraft took to social media to share new findings from Florida Atlantic University’s evaluation of Grammarly.
The update follows Grammarly’s recent rebrand under the Superhuman name, with the Grammarly product continuing as part of the wider AI productivity platform.
Craycraft highlighted that Grammarly users reached a 79.5 percent course completion rate, compared with 74.2 percent for peers who did not use the tool. She also noted a 5.3-point lift in persistence and reported that students who used Grammarly frequently achieved an average GPA of 3.69, compared with lower-frequency or nonusers, even when controlling for baseline GPA and student demographics. Her post stated: “Most AI solutions struggle to demonstrate real impact or return on investment in education. Grammarly is proud to share measurable results that matter, showing significant gains in retention, course completion, and GPA.”
Data shows consistent patterns across cohorts
The supporting research materials provided by Florida Atlantic University outline a multi-term evaluation that included writing-intensive courses, STEM sections, and first-year students. The study found that retention differences widened for newer students, where lower dropout and transfer rates formed a clear trend. Writing performance scores rose within each semester and from one year to the next for students who used Grammarly consistently.
FAU’s reports also point to reduced workload for instructors. Faculty noted fewer mechanical writing errors and more time available for reviewing structure and argument. Grammarly’s integration into existing writing platforms such as Word, Google Docs, Outlook, and Gmail contributed to high adoption without introducing new systems for students to learn..
Craycraft closed her post by stating: “Such results are possible when institutions and AI providers share a mutual goal and commit to thoughtful deployment and researching the impact together.”
