Canva expands creator strategy with Sam Sorscher appointment to lead Pexels community
Move strengthens contributor engagement at Canva-owned stock platform as design ecosystem scales.
Canva has appointed Sam Sorscher as Global Head of Community for Pexels, reinforcing leadership around contributor engagement within its global design ecosystem.
Sorscher announced the move on LinkedIn, writing: “Absolutely delighted to share that I’ll be joining the Canva family as the Global Head of Community for Pexels.”
Canva acquired Pexels in 2018 to expand access to free visual content across its platform. Pexels now supports imagery used within the more than 30 billion designs created on Canva to date.
In her post, Sorscher described Pexels as “one of the largest free stock image libraries in the world,” adding that it “not only supports the visual aid to the 30+ billion designs created on Canva, but is on a mission to democratize content and show the world as it is.”
She stated that in her new role she will “lead the global vision for how Pexels connects, celebrates, and empowers its contributors.”
Community leadership across tech and workforce platforms
Sorscher brings experience from senior roles at Fiverr, where she led community and social impact initiatives, and at General Assembly, where she worked with enterprise clients on reskilling and upskilling programs. Her background spans creator platforms, workforce development, and digital education environments.
Pexels operates as a free stock photo and video platform, with content searchable in 28 languages and an API used by more than 10,000 developers. Its contributor network forms a core part of Canva’s broader content infrastructure.
As generative AI tools reshape content production, platforms reliant on contributor communities face new strategic questions around originality, authenticity, and compensation. Canva’s continued investment in Pexels’ community leadership suggests a focus on maintaining contributor engagement alongside rapid AI feature development.
For education, marketing, and small business users, stock platforms remain embedded within everyday design workflows. Strengthening the contributor layer may prove as important as advancing AI tools in sustaining long-term platform growth.
