Illinois Institute of Technology has announced the appointment of Professor Georgia Papavasiliou as the new chair of its Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The appointment takes effect at the beginning of the fall 2025 semester.
Papavasiliou joined the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2004 after completing a postdoctoral internship at Johnson Polymer in its research and development division.
Focus on hydrogel biomaterials and therapeutic applications
Her research is centered on the design of hydrogel biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine and drug delivery. This includes work on vascularized tissue engineering and the development of hydrogel nanoparticle emulsions for controlled drug release targeting musculoskeletal, intestinal, and cutaneous diseases.
Papavasiliou has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association in her role as principal investigator.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society for Biomaterials, the Materials Research Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education. In 2021, she was elected as a fellow of the IAspire Leadership Academy.
At Illinois Tech, Papavasiliou has received multiple teaching honors. These include the Department of Biomedical Engineering’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Awards in 2016, 2018, and 2022, and the university-wide Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012.
