Digital Science has acquired Jenni AI, an academic research and writing platform used by more than eight million students and researchers in 189 countries, with plans to connect its source discovery and citation tools to the Dimensions research database.

The deal brings together Jenni AI’s writing workspace and Digital Science’s research data, starting with access to a database of 171 million publications. The connection is intended to help users find and cite sources that can be verified against the published research record.

Digital Science provides data, software and infrastructure for researchers, universities, publishers and funders. Adding Jenni AI expands its reach among students and early-career researchers, including those working on master’s dissertations and doctoral theses.

Connecting AI-assisted writing to original sources

Jenni AI supports several stages of academic work within one workspace. Users can upload papers or import reference libraries, explore their sources, draft and refine text, and check citations against the original material.

The planned Dimensions connection addresses a practical problem with AI-assisted research: generated references can point to publications that do not exist. Connecting source suggestions to publication records gives users a way to trace the material supporting their writing.

Stephen Leicht, CEO of Digital Science, says: “Researchers already use AI as a matter of routine. What they can’t get from a general-purpose tool is a citation that has been checked against the actual paper. Jenni AI has built an experience millions of students and researchers choose, often from the very beginning of their careers. Inside Digital Science, every source it suggests can be verified against Dimensions and its 171 million publications, and that stays true as their work grows from a first thesis chapter to a funded lab. We’re glad to have David, Marc, Shailesh and the team with us.”

Jenni joins Overleaf, Papers AI and ReadCube

Jenni AI joins a portfolio that already includes tools for collaborative writing, reference management and research analysis.

Overleaf supports collaborative academic writing using LaTeX, a document preparation system commonly used for technical and scientific work. ReadCube provides AI-powered reference management, while Papers AI brings research data, analysis and writing together.

The acquisition gives Digital Science another route to supporting researchers as their work develops, from finding sources and drafting an initial paper to managing larger research projects. It also strengthens the company’s direct relationships with students at the beginning of their research careers.

Jenni AI will continue as a standalone product under its existing name, with the same team, pricing and subscription plans.

David Park, CEO of Jenni AI, says: “We started Jenni with the belief that the future is written with AI, not by AI. We built Jenni to empower researchers to explore their curiosity and publish great work. By joining Digital Science, we're taking a major step toward a future where every researcher has access to the knowledge, tools, and confidence to push the boundaries of human discovery.”
