UCL unveils AI Mapper+ to improve access to public transport

UKRI-funded innovation uses generative AI and live data to create more accessible and personalized travel planning.

UCL Computer Science has announced AI Mapper+, a research-led public transport technology that applies artificial intelligence to improve how people navigate urban networks.

The announcement, shared in a LinkedIn post, describes the system as “smarter, more inclusive, and responsive to real-world needs.”

Part of a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-funded program, AI Mapper+ is led by Professor Youngjun Cho at UCL’s Department of Computer Science. The department is among the UK’s top-ranked computer science faculties, recognized for its applied research across AI, mobility, and human-computer interaction.

Generative AI applied to transport accessibility

Developed over three years of research, AI Mapper+ combines generative AI and real-time transit data to build personalized journey plans. The system is designed to support both individual users and transport authorities by adapting routes and recommendations based on accessibility needs and travel conditions.

The LinkedIn announcement states: “This AI-powered journey planning technology is designed to transform how people access public transport, making it smarter, more inclusive, and responsive to real-world needs.”

As part of its next phase, UCL is recruiting for a full-time AI Innovation and Business Specialist to support the commercial development of the project. The role will focus on identifying product–market fit, building partnerships, and preparing AI Mapper+ for international expansion.UCL is seeking candidates with experience in business development, technology commercialization, and stakeholder engagement.
