Startup Tandem by Early Years aims to ‘reinvent screen time for early years learning’

Tandem by Early Years, a new learning platform, says it is aiming to “reinvent screen time for early years learning” with its new generative AI technology.

Founded by former clinicians and technologists Rob Hughes and Alastair van Heerden, Tandem uses AI to create personalized storybooks and activities for children aged between two- and eight-years-old.

Content is adapted to each child and is said to reflect family dynamics, cultural relevance, and accessibility needs.

Hughes comments: “Tandem is our solution to a challenge we’ve seen time and again. Parents want to spend quality time with their children, but life gets in the way. We’re using technology to make that easier, turning screens from a passive experience into a tool for creativity and connection.”

Tandem, recently won the 2025 Isle of Man Innovation Challenge, which attracted more than 100 entrants from 20 countries. All winners received six months of access to the Isle of Man’s ecosystem of mentors, investors, regulators and government advisors.

Over 12 weeks, 14 finalists were given hands-on support from regulators, government agencies, investors, and mentors to adapt and tailor their solutions, ending in a finale that saw them present their ideas to a panel of expert judges.

“The Isle of Man stood out to us as a forward-thinking, agile place to pilot meaningful AI solutions,” adds van Heerden. “The Challenge provided access to an ecosystem that shares our values around ethical innovation and social impact.’’
