WorldQuant University launches free deep learning lab to train next generation of AI talent

WorldQuant University has introduced the Deep Learning Fundamentals Lab, a free online certificate built around PyTorch and project work, aimed at learners ready to manage modern AI systems.

WorldQuant University (WQU), a not-for-profit that offers free, online programs in technical and quantitative fields, has launched the Deep Learning Fundamentals Lab, a 16-week certificate designed to prepare learners to manage sophisticated AI systems.

WQU says the lab responds to rising demand for AI skills and is positioned for global access, including regions where cost limits participation in higher education.

Dr. Gabriella Maiello, Academic Dean at WQU, says: “Deep learning is the backbone of modern artificial intelligence, driving breakthroughs in computer vision, natural language processing, autonomous systems, and medical diagnostics.”

WQU cites accelerating demand for AI-skilled professionals and a deep learning market projected to grow from nearly $100 billion in 2024 to as high as $1.3 trillion by 2034. About a quarter of tech job postings now require AI expertise.

The lab is free but not entry-level: applicants should have experience in machine learning, Python, and calculus. It uses PyTorch and emphasizes project-based learning. Participants build neural networks, practice image classification, and apply models to real-world problems across STEM domains. Sample projects include heart-disease detection and prediction of concrete strength.

John Endrud, CEO of WQU, says: “WQU is dedicated to making advanced education accessible to all. Our Deep Learning Fundamentals Lab delivers rigorous, project-based skills, allowing career advancement into specialized AI fields. By removing financial and geographic barriers, we are opening pathways for career switchers, technical learners, and data scientists worldwide.”

The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026

The EdTech Innovation Hub Awards celebrate excellence in global education technology, with a particular focus on workforce development, AI integration, and innovative learning solutions across all stages of education.

Now open for entries, the ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 recognize the companies, platforms, and individuals driving transformation in the sector, from AI-driven assessment tools and personalized learning systems, to upskilling solutions and digital platforms that connect learners with real-world outcomes.

Submissions are open to organizations across the UK, the Americas, and internationally. Entries should highlight measurable impact, whether in K–12 classrooms, higher education institutions, or lifelong learning settings.

Winners will be announced on 14 January 2026 as part of an online showcase featuring expert commentary on emerging trends and standout innovation. All winners and finalists will also be featured in our first print magazine, to be distributed at BETT 2026.
