STEM Next Opportunity Fund partners with Qualcomm to launch AI learning pilot for afterschool programs
STEM Next Opportunity Fund, a national non-profit organization, has announced a new partnership with software provider Qualcomm to launch a new pilot bringing AI and emerging technology to afterschool programs.
Launching initially in Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, the program will provide afterschool educators with the opportunity to bring AI literacy into their sessions.
Students will be given a chance to design real-world solutions to community challenges or analyze local data using AI, building foundational skills. They will also be encouraged to understand and reflect on the ethical implications of AI use.
Insights from the initial pilot will be used to inform the launch of a scalable national model. STEM Next Opportunity Fund reaches more than 12.5 million youth by supporting 390,000 afterschool and summer programs, reaching a network of leaders in every US state.
"AI is transforming every part of our lives, and every young person deserves the chance to understand and shape that future," explains Ron Ottinger, Executive Director of STEM Next Opportunity Fund.
"Afterschool and summer programs are powerful hands-on learning environments that center mentorship and teamwork, giving youth guided support to apply technology creatively and responsibly to address real-world challenges. With Qualcomm's collaboration, we're ensuring that afterschool and summer learning is part of the national strategy to equip youth with AI literacy and future-ready skills."
The pilot scheme is part of STEM Next Opportunity Fund’s Next Level Tech Center of Excellence, of which Qualcomm is a founding partner.
