Pearson shares practical tips for parents to ensure AI is used responsibly as students head back to school

Pearson has shared advice for parents during back-to-school season to ensure students use AI responsibly and can build AI literacy at home.

Pearson says that when AI is integrated into learning thoughtfully, it can be a powerful tool for supporting curiosity and critical thinking, citing previous research that found its AI-powered tools contributed to improved pass rates on its Biology and World History courses.

Families are advised to review their school’s official AI policy and ensure that children understand what they can and cannot do when working on assignments.

Pearson suggests students should be encouraged to use AI with a clear purpose, which will help ensure they are using it intentionally.

AI should be used as a “study partner, not a ghostwriter,” Pearson says. It argues that AI can be used refine a student’s own ideas and arguments but that the core work and critical thinking must be original.

Parents are encouraged to learn the basics of using AI tools themselves. This, Pearson suggests, will ensure they can have more confident conversations with their children and set effective boundaries.

“AI introduces a powerful new dynamic to the learning process, offering incredible potential for personalization,” explains Tom ap Simon, President for Pearson Higher Education and Virtual Learning. “That’s why developing AI literacy is so important – not just knowing how to use these tools, but understanding how to engage with them thoughtfully and ethically.

“Our goal is to help students use AI as a springboard for curiosity, creativity, and deeper learning, so they can thrive in their academic journey and as lifelong learners.”

More than 80 percent of Pearson products are now fully digital or digitally-enabled. The organisation says it is committed to the responsible use of AI to enhance learning and teaching.
