NYU announces new Courant Institute School combining mathematics, computing, and data science
NYU has taken to LinkedIn to outline a major academic reorganization, confirming that the NYU Center for Data Science will join the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science to form the new Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science.
The Center for Data Science, which focuses on research and graduate education in data science, will operate as an independent department within the new school. NYU states that the move strengthens integration across mathematics, applied mathematics, data science, and computer science.
According to NYU, the new Computer Science department will link CS teams at both Courant and the Tandon School of Engineering, with joint appointments across the schools. The initiative is positioned as part of the university’s long-term strategy to strengthen science and technology programs and expand collaborative research across disciplines.
Carlos Fernandez-Granda, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Data Science and Interim Director of the Center for Data Science, says “This is a historic milestone for CDS, which will operate as an independent department within the new School, continuing its mission to advance data-science research and education, while strengthening connections across NYU’s data-science community.”
Leadership and academic direction
NYU confirmed that Silver Professor of Mathematics Gérard Ben Arous will serve as the inaugural dean of the new Courant Institute School. He wrote to the community that “an independent school devoted to scientific research and education has been a shared goal among our community members for decades—with today’s announcement, it has become a reality.”
Academic programs across undergraduate and graduate levels will continue through NYU’s existing colleges, including the Tandon School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Science, with degrees offered in mathematics, computer science, and data science. NYU notes that the unified school is intended to support expanded research capacity and prepare students for roles in technology, academia, and industry.
President Linda G. Mills says “Today, we take the next step in the path that Richard Courant started us on. The creation of a new school that combines mathematics, its theory and application, with computer science and data science.”
