Google brings Gemini AI deeper into Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive
Google is expanding Gemini across Google Workspace, embedding new generative AI capabilities directly into Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.
The updates introduce features that help users generate documents, analyze data, create presentations, and search across files using AI integrated into the workspace environment.
The features began rolling out in beta on March 10 to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with support initially available in English globally for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and in the United States for Google Drive.
Merwan Hade, AI Product at Google, shared the announcement on LinkedIn, writing that “Today is a HUGE day for Google Docs and I’m incredibly proud and grateful to the team.”
He added that Google is “officially making Gemini your co-editor and embedding it directly into your document canvas.”
Gemini moves from assistant to co-editor in Docs
Within Google Docs, Gemini can now generate full drafts using contextual information from a user’s files, emails, or web content. Users can prompt Gemini to create a document directly from the editing interface and refine sections of text or entire drafts using prompts.
New features include “Match writing style,” which allows Gemini to adjust tone, vocabulary, and sentence structure to align with an existing document. Another feature, “Match doc format,” lets users generate new documents that mirror the layout or formatting of reference documents.
According to Google, the updates are designed to help users move from a blank document to a working draft more quickly by drawing on relevant information already stored in Workspace.
Gemini expands capabilities in Sheets and Slides
Google is also expanding Gemini’s role in Sheets, where the AI tool can now create and organize spreadsheets from a prompt. Users can ask Gemini to generate checklists, data trackers, or analysis tables based on information in their emails or files.
A new “Fill with Gemini” feature can populate spreadsheet cells with generated text, summaries, or categorized data, while also retrieving information from Google Search where needed.
In Slides, Gemini now supports generating slides that align with an existing presentation’s design and theme. Users can ask Gemini to draft slides based on prompts or adjust formatting to match a presentation’s style.
Google says it is also working on a feature that will allow users to generate an entire presentation from a single prompt.
AI search and analysis arrive in Drive
Google Drive is also gaining new AI capabilities through an “Ask Gemini” feature that allows users to query files using natural language.
Gemini can summarize relevant information from documents and provide an AI-generated overview at the top of search results, allowing users to understand key information without opening individual files.
Users can also ask questions across documents, emails, calendars, and web sources to generate responses based on their stored information.
Google says the goal is to turn Drive from a file storage system into an environment where users can interact with their data more directly using AI.
