Anthropic to open India office focused on AI for social impact in sectors including education and healthcare

Anthropic, an AI start-up and the creator of Claude, has announced plans to open its second office in Asia Pacific with an office in Bengaluru, India due to open in 2026.

AI research company Anthropic, creator of the Claude family of large language models, is expanding operations to India with a new office set to open in Bengaluru in early 2026.

The move marks Anthropic’s second Asia-Pacific location after Tokyo and reflects growing adoption of its Claude AI tools among Indian enterprises and developers.

India has become the company’s second-largest global market for Claude, behind only the United States. A significant share of usage in India comes from technical and programming-related tasks such as mobile UI development, web app debugging, and software testing.

Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei is visiting India this week to meet with partners across government, enterprise, and the startup ecosystem. Amodei said India’s combination of technical skill and focus on responsible innovation made the country central to the company’s long-term plans.

“India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets,” says Amodei. “There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company, from deploying AI across diverse languages and contexts, to building frameworks for responsible governance.”

Education and social impact at the forefront

Drew Bent, Anthropic’s Education Lead and co-founder of education nonprofit Schoolhouse.world, took to LinkedIn while in India to highlight the company’s education efforts. “I’m in India this week meeting with education NGOs and teachers,” he wrote. “It’s inspiring to see the focus on innovation, learning outcomes, and democratizing access to high-quality education. Anthropic is opening an office in India, and supporting access in education is a key part of the impact we hope to have.”

The company said its India operations will focus on AI for social impact sectors including education, healthcare, and agriculture, alongside partnerships with Indian enterprises and startups. The Bengaluru office will also support India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by providing access to Anthropic’s AI tools and technical expertise.

Supporting India’s AI ecosystem and Indic language use

Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith says the expansion comes at a time when “Indian enterprises and startups are seeking AI models they can trust.” He adds that Anthropic sees strong potential in India’s innovation ecosystem, citing collaboration between startup and enterprise communities developing global solutions.

As part of the expansion, Anthropic is strengthening Claude’s support for Indic languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. The company says this localization effort will help extend AI access to a wider range of users, especially in public sector and education initiatives.

Claude adoption growing across Indian enterprises

Anthropic noted that major Indian firms such as CRED already use Claude for critical coding projects. The company’s recent Economic Index Report found that Indian users rely heavily on Claude for technical development work, and that usage of Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI-powered programming assistant, grew tenfold in its first three months after launch.

Amodei says the company’s work in India is aligned with a broader vision for inclusive and responsible AI growth. “India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organizations in India to pave a path for how beneficial AI can be scaled in a way that serves everyone,” he comments.
