A new AI spinout from UCL, Kings College and a coalition of NHS Foundation Trusts to improve care using healthcare data

A new spinout company from University College London, Kings College London and a group of NHS Foundation Trusts is hoping to use healthcare data to improve patient care, safety and research.

The company, called CogStack Ltd, uses new software that can search and interpret any structured or unstructured clinical data in patient records by using a type of AI called Natural Language Processing (NLP).

The software removes the need for some of the manual analysis and interpretation usually conducted by NHS staff.

Healthcare providers already using CogStack say they have recouped 100 percent of their investment in the software within two years.

Professor Dobson, CogStack’s Chief Research Officer, comments: “CogStack has the potential to transform healthcare by making sense of NHS data. It will help to inform clinical guidelines across the UK and globally, and we now want to share this to improve the functioning of the NHS and, most importantly, outcomes for patients.”

Dr Nick McNally, Managing Director of Research at UCLH/UCL, adds: "It’s really exciting for the UCLH BRC to be involved in developing disruptive AI technology like Cogstack. At the BRC we identified 10 years ago the amazing transformative potential of Cogstack for health care and clinical research. It’s a pleasure to support the leading expertise of Richard and the team and we are delighted to be partners in this new spin out venture which will enable further development of the technology and its wider application at scale across more health and care organisations."
