YuJa launches interactive accessibility comparison and demo tools after Supreme Court ruling on disability rights in U.S. schools
Yuja Inc, a provider of EdTech solutions for accessibility, has launched the YuJa Panorama LMS Accessibility Platform following a Supreme Court ruling on the right of individuals to sue educational institutions for failing to accommodate their needs.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Tharpe v. Osseo Area Schools clarified the standards under which students with disabilities can pursue discrimination claims against schools.
Ava Tharpe, a student with severe epilepsy, was able to sue a school district after being told her school in Minnesota would be unable to accommodate her need to attend evening classes due to morning seizures that prevented her from attending regular classes.
The Supreme Court overturned a previous decision by a lower court, clarifying that educational institutions should be judged under the same “deliberate indifference” standard as other organizations and lowering the burden for students who have been denied accommodations to pursue discrimination lawsuits.
YuJa Inc says its new YuJa Panorama platform gives education institutions tools to identify, remediate, and improve the accessibility of digital course content.
“The Supreme Court’s decision reinforces that accessibility isn’t optional,” explains Nathan Arora, Chief Executive Officer at YuJa, Inc. “Institutions have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure students with disabilities are supported in the learning environment. YuJa Panorama was designed to help them do that in a sustainable and scalable way.”
YuJa Panorama can integrate into learning management systems and scan course materials for accessibility issues and generate alternative accessible formats such as audio, ePub and high-contrast PDFs. The platform can also provide analytics and dashboards that help instructors and administrators to make data-informed decisions.
The company has also launched a new interactive tool that allows educators to try out alternative formats firsthand, showing how accessible versions of content can benefit all learners.
“We’re here to help institutions move beyond compliance and toward a culture of inclusion,” Arora adds. “That means giving educators the insights and tools they need to meet learners where they are.”
Earlier this year, YuJa, Inc launched PDF Remediation Max, an AI-powered add-on for its YuJa Panorama Digital Accessibility Platform. The tool is designed to enhance the PDF accessibility functions provided by the existing PDF Remediation Engine, offering advanced capabilities to manage complex accessibility issues in PDF documents.
