The University of Utah is offering free access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu to all of its students, faculty, and staff as it aims to promote responsible use of AI.

Access to the tool can be requested through the university’s IT service catalogue, allowing access without sharing any university data to train the tool. ChatGPT Edu also allows for university-wide security features, making it safer to use than personal accounts.

“We’ve been steadily building a foundation for responsible AI across campus, and ChatGPT Edu represents a major leap forward,” Manish Parashar, Chief AI Officer at University of Utah, says. “The U is at the forefront of reimagining how we teach, learn and research in the age of generative AI, and ChatGPT Edu will help us maintain an edge. We’re excited for our community to use this tool in a way that’s secure, optimized for academic work and aligned with our values.”

ChatGPT Edu can be used for all university work that does not use sensitive or restricted data. Hospital and clinic staff are yet to be given permission to use the tool while the university conducts a separate evaluation on its use in these contexts.

The University of Utah is asking all students, faculty and staff to use ChatGPT Edu rather than their personal accounts to help them get the most out of the tool while still meeting university guidelines for its use.

The university has also partnered with OpenAI to offer virtual training on the tool’s use. OpenAI will train more than 100 individuals this year, before additional training is offered in January.

The news follows shortly after the University of Utah launched Utah 360, bringing multiple campus apps into one platform for students, staff and alumni. Utah 360 combines a legacy sports app, general campus app, ticketing system, and an alumni portal. The app will be personalized for each user’s needs and interests.
