Student housing near LSU adopts mobile Safety Button for enhanced resident protection

PointCentral and ePropertyCare roll out technology that connects students and staff to 24/7 monitoring and emergency response.

A student housing complex near Louisiana State University and Southern University has introduced a mobile Safety Button designed to provide immediate access to emergency services.

Altitude Baton Rouge, managed by Tailwind Group, is the first student housing property to deploy the Safety Button, developed by smart property technology company PointCentral in partnership with ePropertyCare. The system is intended to give students and staff direct connections to a monitoring center that can coordinate emergency responses.

Safety tool aimed at reducing risks

The Safety Button works nationwide and allows residents to request help from trained responders at any time. It can be used in apartments, on campus, or elsewhere, with GPS tracking providing location details to emergency services.

Nate Wysk, general manager of PointCentral, says the feature is designed to address basic security needs. “Thriving rental communities are built atop the most foundational need for safe and secure living environments. The Safety Button puts a powerful, easy-to-use tool right in the pockets of residents and onsite staff,” Wysk says.

The system also includes optional features, such as a virtual Safety Network for walking assistance, and allows residents to log details about their activities or companions in case the information is needed by first responders.

Balancing technology with practical use

For students, the tool could serve as a backup in situations where they feel unsafe or need medical help. However, its success depends on residents actively using it and the monitoring center responding quickly.

Nicky Tyus, property manager at Altitude Baton Rouge, says it gives parents and students additional reassurance. “I’m very excited about the launch of our new Safety Button feature. This tool empowers all of our residents with immediate access to assistance anywhere in the United States. It brings peace of mind not only to our students, but also to their parents and loved ones, knowing that help is just a button press away,” Tyus says.

Technology like the Safety Button reflects a shift in what residents expect from student housing providers, with more emphasis on digital safety and health tools.

Charles Hadsell, CEO and founder of ePropertyCare, says the platform aims to meet those expectations. “This feature truly sets a new standard in personal safety,” Hadsell says. “Today’s residents expect technology that not only makes their lives more convenient but also keeps them safe, and the Safety Button delivers on both fronts.”

PointCentral, an independent subsidiary of Alarm.com, says the tool is part of its wider approach to combining property automation with resident safety.
