OpenAI acquires Sky developer to enhance ChatGPT desktop integration

Software Applications Incorporated joins OpenAI, bringing its macOS assistant Sky into the ChatGPT ecosystem.

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a Mac-based natural language interface that allows users to interact with AI directly on their desktop. The update was shared in a LinkedIn post by Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT.

Software Applications Incorporated has built what Turley described as “one of the most thoughtful AI experiences on desktop — an assistant that truly works alongside you.” Sky enables users to write, plan, code, and manage tasks through natural language while understanding on-screen context and acting through Mac applications.

OpenAI said the acquisition will bring Sky’s “deep macOS integration and product craft into ChatGPT,” with all members of the Sky team joining OpenAI.

Turley wrote: “We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done. Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day.”

Ari Weinstein, Co-Founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, said the company built Sky to make computers “more empowering, customizable, and intuitive.”

He added: “With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That’s why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We’re thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people.”

OpenAI stated that the acquisition was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, and approved by the company’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. An investment fund associated with Sam Altman held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated prior to the deal.
