New data from language app Preply finds nearly half of Fortune 100 companies are recruiting bilingual and multilingual speakers
Language learning app Preply has shared new data that found nearly half of all Fortune 100 companies are currently seeking bilingual and multilingual speakers.
Preply analyzed job vacancies at major organizations and calculated the percentage of roles that require bilingual or multilingual skills.
The top ten companies seeking bilingual or multilingual speakers include retailer Walmart, online giant Amazon, healthcare provider UnitedHealth Group, and technology specialist Apple.
Of the 100 companies featured in Fortune 100, 49 were advertising roles requiring language skills. On LinkedIn, there are more than 280,000 jobs listed at these companies and more than 1,000 mention “bilingual” or “multilingual”.
Preply also found that there were more job listings seeking multilingual candidates than those specifying bilingual, which it says shows increased demand for those who can speak more than two languages.
“Language can differ in business wherever you go, and this research found that Fortune 100 companies from sectors such as financial services and banking, and food and beverages, are among the most likely to look for ‘bilingual’ and ‘multilingual’ speakers,” comments Cristina Miguelez, spokesman for Preply.
“These skills don’t just benefit the employer; they benefit the employee as well. Our research indicates that a second language is extremely useful to increase learning potential. In fact, speaking another language could boost your salary by as much as 47% and, in some countries, that can mean earning more than £26,000 extra ($35,000) every year.
“These findings further indicate the essential need to protect language learning, especially at the highest level of business, where international expansion is fast becoming an increasingly important growth driver for businesses.
