MBZUAI highlights AI innovation in energy sector at ADIPEC 2025

The Abu Dhabi-based university outlined how artificial intelligence can improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in energy operations.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) participated in this year’s ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi, joining global organizations to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in transforming the energy industry.

The university said AI is becoming “essential infrastructure” in energy, enhancing safety, reducing emissions, and driving operational performance when designed with human needs in mind.

MBZUAI presented several projects that demonstrate how AI can be integrated into industrial systems. The institution, which focuses on graduate education and research in artificial intelligence, emphasized its goal of connecting frontier AI research with global industry through collaborative partnerships.

Six members of MBZUAI’s faculty and leadership spoke at the event, addressing themes such as talent development, robotics, human-computer interaction, and data-driven decision systems.

Key initiatives and research presented

Provost Tim Baldwin discussed the university’s approach to preparing graduates for an AI-driven future through hands-on research and entrepreneurship. Jon Carvill, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, described MBZUAI’s innovation model as one that converts collaboration into measurable progress for the UAE and beyond.

Director of Industry and AI Innovation Dr. Ramzi Ben Ouaghrem outlined how the university’s work aims to deliver responsible AI supported by strong research and partnerships. Ivan Laptev, Professor of Computer Vision, showcased LAIKA, an AI-powered inspection robot designed to reduce risk for humans in hazardous settings while improving efficiency.

Professor Olivier Oullier explored human–AI collaboration, focusing on systems that adapt to individuals and support decision-making and wellbeing. Professor Joshua Bakita presented K2 Think, an open-source AI reasoning system designed to help organizations make faster and more transparent energy decisions.

MBZUAI stated that its growing engagement with the energy sector “demonstrates how AI capability has become essential infrastructure” and supports “both performance and protection” in complex operational environments.
