JetBrains unveils Matter to reimagine collaboration between AI and human developers

JetBrains has introduced Matter, an AI-powered platform designed to help product teams prototype and test code collaboratively, bridging the gap between design and development workflows.

JetBrains, the software development company behind tools such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm, has announced the launch of Matter, a new AI development companion for product teams.

JetBrains is a software development company known for creating tools that support programming and collaborative workflows.

Headquartered in Prague, it develops integrated development environments such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, and WebStorm, as well as the Kotlin programming language. Its products are used across industry and education to help developers write, test, and manage code more efficiently.

In a LinkedIn post, Oleg Koverznev, Vice President and Head of JetBrains Cloud Platform, said the company is “starting to define how we at JetBrains imagine collaboration between creative humans and intelligent AI agents.”

He added, “It’s not about replacing craft — it’s about extending it. It gives designers, developers, and product teams a shared space where ideas become code instantly, visually, and collaboratively.”

Platform connects AI with team workflows

Matter integrates with GitHub and allows teams to experiment within isolated environments. Product managers, designers, and developers can connect an existing repository, make real-time changes, and generate working prototypes without impacting production code.

According to JetBrains, users can use prompts such as “make this a single-page checkout” or “add a product review section” to modify applications directly. Every edit appears live in the preview, creating an experience similar to design collaboration tools.

Matter also enables users to hand off changes seamlessly through GitHub pull requests or automatically generated documentation drafts. The tool is currently available through an Early Access Program and supports web-based projects.

Balancing AI automation with human expertise

JetBrains said Matter aims to give non-technical teammates the ability to test, iterate, and refine directly within the codebase while freeing engineers to focus on more complex work.

The company emphasized that while AI can automate repetitive or surface-level coding, team expertise remains central to building robust software.

“Matter lets you share working prototypes instantly with teammates and stakeholders,” JetBrains stated. “When PMs and designers can validate ideas in hours, the whole team moves faster.”

Elena Berendeeva, who led the Matter announcement, wrote that the initiative builds on JetBrains’ long-standing philosophy of creating tools that “enhance creativity and make the hard things easier.”
