GitLab Foundation opens applications for CEO Shadow Program on leadership and philanthropy

GitLab Foundation CEO Ellie Bertani takes to social media to announce that applications are open for the Foundation’s CEO Shadow Program, offering participants the chance to observe leadership and philanthropy in practice.

In a LinkedIn post, GitLab Foundation CEO Ellie Bertani confirmed that applications are now open for the organization’s CEO Shadow Program. The Foundation operates as a global philanthropy focused on improving lifetime earnings through education, training, access to opportunities, and systems change. It is associated with GitLab, Inc., the all-remote DevOps platform company.

The CEO Shadow Program runs for three to five business days, with participants attending meetings and observing how decisions are made. Engagements require a commitment of at least five to six hours per day, and shadows are expected to join virtually via Zoom. Confidentiality agreements and professional conduct are mandatory. Participants are asked to take notes and reflect on their experience in preparation for a final debrief session.

The initiative is open to both internal team members and external applicants, including students, professionals, and partners. Internal participants are encouraged to use the program to explore leadership and cross-functional opportunities within the organization, while external candidates must meet specific criteria that align with the Foundation’s mission. Individuals may only participate once per year.

Ellie Bertani, CEO at GitLab Foundation, says in the LinkedIn post: “This is a unique chance to spend 3–5 days inside the Foundation, joining real meetings, observing how decisions are made, and getting a closer look at how philanthropy works behind the scenes. The program is designed as a two-way learning experience - participants gain insight into leadership, strategy, and impact-driven philanthropy - and we learn from the fresh perspectives they bring.”
