Wiley and Perplexity join forces to integrate scholarly content into AI-powered search tools
The partnership gives students and researchers verified access to Wiley collections through Perplexity’s AI interface, with pilot implementations underway in the US and UK.
Wiley has partnered with Perplexity to incorporate its education and research content into Perplexity’s generative AI search platform.
The agreement positions Wiley as the company’s first education partner, enabling academic institutions to access Wiley-published resources through Perplexity’s Enterprise Pro platform.
Perplexity, founded in 2022, is an AI-driven search engine that offers conversational responses backed by live web sources and cited references. The collaboration is intended to address concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated responses by incorporating peer-reviewed, verified content directly into academic search results.
Access to Wiley collections through AI search
The integration allows faculty, students, and researchers at participating institutions to access Wiley collections across subject areas including nursing, business, and engineering. Results will feature citations, reinforcing transparency and academic integrity while introducing new pathways for interacting with educational content.
Perplexity’s multilingual capabilities and support for inline citations aim to make the tool accessible for global audiences while ensuring responses are based on licensed materials and current web sources.
Josh Jarrett, Senior Vice President of AI Growth at Wiley, says: “Wiley saw the potentially huge benefits of AI early on and chose to fully invest in it, and we’ve been working with our partners to help shape its future ever since. As AI adoption accelerates across research and learning environments, this partnership—between a trusted publisher and an AI innovator—provides a solution for incorporating verified, expert content within these tools. We're meeting researchers and students where they are with resources they can trust.”
Texas A&M University and Texas State University are among the first institutions to implement the new integration. Universities in the United Kingdom are expected to follow. Wiley employees will also receive access to Perplexity’s platform as part of the partnership, which the company says aligns with its broader adoption of AI across internal operations.
Arnold Castro, Assistant Dean of AI at Mays Business School, Texas A&M University, says: “We are excited to partner with Perplexity to equip our students and educators with cutting-edge AI tools. Our goal is to make every degree AI-ready, and by rolling out Perplexity Enterprise Pro technology across campus with the Wiley integration, we’re empowering our 75,000+ students to develop the skills they need to succeed in an AI-driven world. This partnership represents not just a technological advancement, but a fundamental shift in how we prepare the next generation of leaders to leverage AI responsibly and effectively.”
Global access and responsible use priorities
The companies say the partnership is designed to balance ease of access with academic accountability. Unlike general-purpose chatbots that can provide unverified information, Perplexity’s system integrates licensed content with up-to-date sources and full attribution.
Dmitry Shevelenko, Chief Business Officer at Perplexity, says: “Perplexity and Wiley are embracing the way that Gen Z likes to learn, not only in their schooling but in their careers. Unlike other AI tools that create tension between students and educators, Perplexity is an AI solution that both school administrators and students can openly adopt and use together. This new partnership represents a significant step in our commitment to providing accurate, sourced information through AI. By integrating Wiley's trusted research and education resources with our AI search capabilities, we're enhancing the research experience for our users worldwide.”
