The Radclyffe School has announced a new partnership with Diodes Incorporated to support its students in the UK-wide STEM On Track challenge. The collaboration, shared in a LinkedIn post from the school, connects Diodes’ Chadderton engineers and apprentices with students who are designing and building two racing karts to compete nationally.
Local engineering firm joins forces with school
Diodes Incorporated is an international semiconductor manufacturer that develops analog and discrete power solutions for leading global companies. Its Chadderton site is now working directly with the school to guide the project.
Katie Wainwright, HR Business Partner at Diodes, says: “At Diodes Engineering, one of our priorities is to encourage younger students to develop an interest in STEM. When we heard about this opportunity, we felt it aligned with our goals as a business and in the local community. We can’t wait to see how this project progresses and how the students grow their STEM skills along the way.”
The partnership enables The Radclyffe School’s STEM club to construct two karts, The Apex Radclyffe Racers and The Thundervolts, each built by student teams responsible for design, assembly, and testing. The club previously finished seventh in their race and fifteenth overall at last year’s national finals and aims to improve on that result this season.
Engineers provide mentoring and industry insight
Diodes staff are visiting the school weekly to support students through the build process and share real-world engineering expertise. Matt Brown, Head of Design Technology at The Radclyffe School, says: “We approached Diodes to explore ways to inspire our students in STEM, and they were excited to support our club, especially given their local presence and their history of supporting Radclyffe School alumni. Their engineers and staff will make a huge impact, and help our students see the practical side of science and engineering while boosting their confidence and teamwork skills.”
Located in Chadderton, Oldham, The Radclyffe School is a secondary school that says it is focused on preparing students for 21st-century careers. With Diodes’ ongoing mentorship, students are completing their kart designs ahead of the STEM On Track national finals, where they will compete against more than 100 UK schools later this year.
