Roblox announces plans to expand age estimation to all users as it launches strategic partnership with the IARC

Roblox has announced plans to expand its age estimation capabilities to all users accessing its communication features before the end of the year as well as a new strategic partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC).

The online gaming platform says it will use a combination of facial age estimation technology and ID age verification - as well as verified parental consent - to gain a more accurate estimation of each user’s age than relying on the age listed on an account.

Roblox says it will use new systems to limit communication on its platform between adults and children - unless the users know each other in the real world.

“These added layers of protection will help provide users with access to developmentally appropriate features and content. We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow,” Roblox said in a statement.

Partnership with the IARC

Roblox has also announced a new strategic partnership with the IARC, a recognized standard for content ratings for digital apps and games.

“Roblox is committed to creating a safe platform for our users and empowering parents to make the best decision for their children,” comments Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Office at Roblox. “We’re excited to partner with IARC and hope it will provide parents globally with more clarity and confidence regarding age-appropriate content.”

“With so many families engaging with Roblox, it is hugely beneficial to provide parents with trusted and familiar ratings no matter where they live,” adds Patricia Vance, President of the ESRB and chairperson of IARC.

“The globally streamlined process will provide Roblox creators with an efficient and proven process for obtaining age and content ratings, while informing parents of what their kids may experience before they play.”

The news follows shortly after Roblox announced that its new Learning Hub is now available to all of its users. All users can access educational experiences from Roblox creators and providers including Google Be Internet Awesome World, Words of Power by Mrs Wordsmith and the Math Tower Race by TeamRy.
