OpenAI announces Education for Countries, scaling AI for national education systems, at Davos
OpenAI has announced the launch of Education for Countries at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Switzerland.
Education for Countries will work with Ministries of Education, universities, research institutes and other partners to bring AI to education systems across the world, aiming to personalize education, reduce admin, and prepare students for the workforce.
The project will see OpenAI provide access to ChatGPTEdu, GPT-5.2, study mode, and canvas, helping to support local learning priorities.
OpenAI says it will also collaborate on national research projects aiming to understand how AI supports learning and productivity. It will provide tailored training in the form of ChatGPT-based certifications and courses from the OpenAI Academy.
Education for Countries also hopes to create a network of governments, researchers, and education leaders to share insights and help shape responsible AI use in education.
Writing on LinkedIn, OpenAI’s Solutions Engineering Lead, Government and Education, Shaig Abduragimov explains: “As AI capabilities continue to rapidly advance, education will be critical to closing what we’re calling the ‘capability overhang’ — the emerging gap between what AI can do and the value most people are actually capturing from it. Education for Countries is designed to help governments embed AI into their core education infrastructure, combining expanded access to advanced AI tools, large-scale research into AI’s impact on learning, and training and certifications for both educators and students.
“Work is already underway in Estonia, the UAE, Greece, Jordan, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Italy. I’m grateful to our first cohort of partners for paving the way.
“We’re also expanding our OpenAI for Countries programme with new initiatives focused on health, cybersecurity, disaster response and preparedness, and start-up accelerators. They give nations a range of options for how to work with us to address their needs and priorities, and build directly on our commitment to expanding economic opportunity with AI.”
Education for Countries’ first cohort includes Estonia, Greece, Italy’s Conference of University Rectors, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates. Its next cohort will be announced later this year.
