One in three Americans has used an AI tool to make career decisions, according to a new study

A new study conducted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University has found that Americans are turning to AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to consider career changes and further study.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University surveyed 1,000 Americans about their use of AI in making decisions about their careers and education.

The results show that one in three Americans have used an AI tool such as ChatGPT to help them make a career decision. Nearly one in five Americans said the AI tool had suggested a career path they had not considered previously.

More than half (52 percent) of those surveyed said they were currently considering a career or job change, with members of Gen Z most likely to be considering switching jobs, followed by Millennials and Gen X. Just 12 percent of baby boomers were considering switching careers.

As well as using AI tools to support career decisions, 43 percent of Americans have used AI tools to write cover letters and CVs and 19 percent have used it to identify high-demand, well–paying roles.

More than half (54 percent) of those surveyed were considering enrolling in a degree, graduate or certificate program and 13 percent had used an AI tool to compare the return on investment of different degrees or courses.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University says the results show that AI is starting to play a surprising role in shaping life choices as popular tools become a part of the decision-making process.
