Microsoft AI for Good Lab hiring Senior Research Scientist to expand global AI for impact projects
Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab is recruiting a Senior Research Scientist specializing in geospatial AI to work in Strasbourg or Redmond.

Microsoft has announced a new opening at its AI for Good Lab for a Senior Research Scientist (Machine Learning, Geospatial AI), as shared on social media by Juan M. Lavista Ferres, Corporate Vice President and Chief Data Scientist at Microsoft, in a recent LinkedIn post.
The AI for Good Lab develops data and AI-driven solutions to tackle pressing global issues, partnering with non-profits, governments, and researchers worldwide. Its focus areas include food security, biodiversity, disaster response, and public health—combining applied research, data engineering, and collaboration.
Lavista Ferres said the new role is aimed at researchers passionate about “using AI to address global challenges—from food security and disaster response to biodiversity and health.” He added that the position offers an opportunity to “make real impact” by working with NGOs, governments, and academic partners on AI for social good projects.
Role to focus on geospatial AI and cross-sector collaboration
The role will require designing and implementing AI and machine learning models for geospatial analysis, leveraging Microsoft Cloud and global data resources. The candidate will work with distributed teams across disciplines, identifying data sources, advancing AI research, and publishing findings in collaboration with the broader scientific community.
Responsibilities include developing AI applications for real-world impact, contributing to open research, and co-developing solutions with Microsoft’s global partners. The Lab emphasizes transparency and knowledge sharing through conferences and publications.
Applicants must hold a doctorate in computer science, data science, mathematics, engineering, or related fields, or demonstrate equivalent experience. Additional preferred qualifications include expertise in PyTorch, satellite imagery, and remote sensing, as well as a record of peer-reviewed publications.
Continuing Microsoft’s AI for Good strategy
The AI for Good Lab, part of Microsoft’s global social impact initiatives, works under Lavista Ferres’ leadership to build AI solutions aligned with humanitarian and environmental goals. The Lab has previously developed projects related to disaster prediction, ecosystem monitoring, and public health response.
Lavista Ferres said, “You’ll work with world-class researchers, NGOs, and governments, developing and publishing cutting-edge AI for social good projects powered by Microsoft’s cloud and data capabilities.”
The position is open in Strasbourg, France, and Redmond, Washington, with hybrid work options.
