IEEE unveils IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite - a new AI assistant built on verified, expert vetted research
Grounded in millions of IEEE full-text publications, the new system delivers three times the accuracy for STEM researchers while mitigating AI hallucinations and bias
The new IEEE AI assistant allows readers to search, discover and make sense of research
IEEE, the global technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, has unveiled its IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite built to read and reason over the full text of millions of peer-reviewed IEEE publications.
The system means that researchers get answers grounded in complete, verified science, delivering a significantly high level of accuracy and trust.
Powered by a proprietary AI system expertly tuned and optimized for STEM literature, the IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite introduces powerful, intelligent features within the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, which provides full-text access to IEEE standards, journals, magazines, conference proceedings, and more, to transform the research experience.
Seamless search and discovery
The suite enables users to seamlessly search and discover articles, accelerate their comprehension of complex technical papers, and surface deep insights, replacing rigid keyword queries with natural, conversational research workflows. Key capabilities include:
Semantic AI rearch: Users can input freeform, natural language queries or even paste long text blocks to surface semantically similar research and identify novel solutions while also providing smart keyword suggestions to refine search terms.
Time-saving summaries: The platform generates instant, highly accurate AI overviews that provide an easily digestible summary of the results and AI-generated article summaries that deliver a concise synopsis of the article and in-context definitions to grasp new concepts faster, and accelerate research efforts.
Built on trusted content: The only AI research assistant that leverages both the full text and metadata of IEEE’s peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers to optimize the accuracy and relevance of the result delivered.
Comprehensive coverage: IEEE Xplore AI Search provides access to an extensive range of STEM metadata and abstracts from journal articles and conference papers. The selection is expertly curated to include scholarly articles in STEM, without the typical noise found in other tools.
Source links and verifiable results: To ensure maximum utility, AI-generated overviews directly reference and link to source documents, allowing users to quickly verify information and cross-reference findings.
A trustworthy approach to AI
As AI tools become more common in research, IEEE built the Xplore AI Research Suite around a simple principle: that answers should be trustworthy, not just fast.
W. Clem Karl, Vice President, IEEE Publication Services and Products, explained: “AI can be a highly effective and beneficial tool that can help researchers accelerate discovery, enhance decision-making and surface new connections.
“However, many AI engines present a great risk of hallucinating answers or introducing bias into otherwise credible research.
“With this in mind, IEEE has taken a responsible approach in our AI strategy by developing concrete safeguards to ensure our solution is rigorously grounded in scientific evidence that users can trust.
“As stewards of the scholarly record, we held the new AI engine to the same standard as the peer-reviewed research we publish – a researcher shouldn't have to trust an answer, they should be able to verify the work behind it.”
The search retrieval process is strictly limited to querying the millions of peer-reviewed full-text documents within IEEE, alongside an expertly curated dataset of STEM metadata.
If the AI is unable to find relevant scientific content within the strictly defined dataset, it will transparently inform the user rather than generating false or fabricated answers. IEEE Xplore AI is built for verifiable trust, and every AI-generated answer references and links directly to its source documents, so users can quickly confirm what they are reading is accurate.
Collaboration with the scientific community
IEEE developed the IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite over 14 months in close collaboration with the global scientific and library communities.
More than 3,000 alpha and beta testers – including engineers, scientists, and library information professionals – provided feedback to refine the AI engine and support research workflows.
The Suite is now available as an optional subscription upgrade to institutional subscribers of the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. For more information go to: www.ieee.org/IEEEXploreAi.
