Google DeepMind launches AI for Math Initiative in partnership with five leading institutions
Imperial College London, Institute for Advanced Study, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES), Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing (UC Berkeley), and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research will all join as inaugural partners.
The initiative will work on identifying the next generation of mathematical problems that could be solved with AI-driven insights.
Google will support the initiative with funding and access to Google DeepMind’s technologies, including an enhanced reasoning mode called Gemini Deep Think. It hopes the initiative will create a feedback loop between research and applied AI, potentially leading to deeper partnerships.
Google’s AlphaGeometry and AlphaProof systems achieved silver-medal standard at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2024 and its latest model of Gemini, equipped with DeepThink, achieved gold-medal level performance this year.
In a statement, Google says: “We are only at the beginning of understanding everything AI can do, and how it can help us think about the deepest questions in science. By combining the profound intuition of world-leading mathematicians with the novel capabilities of AI, we believe new pathways of research can be opened, advancing human knowledge and moving toward new breakthroughs across the scientific disciplines.”
